The National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts, aka Weiwuying, was opened in October 2018. It is world’s largest Theater-complex under one roof and was designed by Francine HOUBEN of Mecanoo architecten, it contains an opera house, a playhouse, a concert hall and a recital hall, and an outdoor stage to accommodate up to 20,000 people. Although without house ensemble, chorus and orchestra, under the artistic directorship of CHIEN Wen-pin, former Kapellmeister of Deutsche Oper am Rhein for 22 years, Weiwuying has presented one opera production and one opera in concert form every year and the performed repertoire has increased to 20 operas. For the 2026/27 season, VERDI’s “Il trovatore” was premiered in September 2026, with stage director Pier Francesco MAESTRINI, stage designer Nicolas BONI and other Taiwanese designers, the four performances reached 95% box office capacity. In February 2027 MOZART’s “Don Giovanni” will be performed in concert form. Further plan includes BIZET’s “Carmen”, a coproduction with Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb.
